Both "skew" and "distort" mean to give a false account of something or to make something out of shape.

Both "average" and "intermediate" mean the level between advanced and beginner.

Both "discontinue" and "suspend" mean to stop doing something.

Both "span" and "duration" mean the length of time.

Both "on top of" and "overlap" mean to extend over a part of something.

When health officials come to a factory to inspect its safety measures, the manager needs to ask the workers to stop doing their work. In other words, production needs to be suspended.

If several courses teach things that are partly similar, students will learn the same things over and over again without acquiring new knowledge. Therefore, curriculum developers need to examine the course contents to make sure they do not get repeated, or overlap.

In general, a degree usually takes three to four years to complete. But in some countries such as the United States, it is possible to pursue two degrees at the same time, or concurrently, if some course credits can be shared.

Lawyers do not always represent justice. On the contrary, they often give a false account of something to win a case. To put it another way, they sometimes distort the facts to help their clients.

Reference books for advanced learners typically require the reader to have had extensive previous knowledge in a particular area. If the reader does not meet this prerequisite, he or she will have a hard time understanding its content and may need an intermediate book to brush up on the knowledge needed.
